More information about Joellen, her art techniques and media:

A professional artist and writer as well as a native of northern New York, Joan E. Upham creates fine, detailed drawings of the flora and fauna of the Adirondack region under her artistic signature -- Joellen.

Joan turned her attention to the images and tastes of nature more than 20 years ago when she began foraging for wild foods; and her renderings of nature and wildlife have become a dominant theme in her work since that time. Using the drawing medias of pencil, ink, or watercolor, she describes the complex ecological diversity within her works. Her drawing entitled "Spring" was an award winner at the APA Forest Preserve Centennial Art Show. Her works have been seen in the traditional ways -- galleries and art shows -- and as graphic illustration for her writing and the writing of other authors.

With a B. A. in Printmaking and extensive experience working with Macintosh computers, Joan has turned her attention to producing prints of her art work by electronic means. Combining the traditional elements of drawing with the high-tech elements available through today's computer hardware, software, and peripherals, she begins by using a flatbed scanner and highly developed scanner software to capture the images of her detailed drawings and make initial adjustments to the scanned images before transferring them into her graphics software. Using her graphics software, Joan continues the process of refining the images and their colors until they are faithful to the look and coloration of her original drawings. Proofs are printed throughout the refinement processes and standard art papers are using in the printer for the final prints. Joan feels this high-tech form of printmaking is not only exciting because of the wide range of new tools available to an artist but because it allows the artist to remain in complete aesthetic control of the process from start to finish.

1999 Biography Update:

"The Loon Dance," (created in January of1999) represents the first time that she has done a complete work directly on the computer using only the digital media throughout the entire process. This piece denotes a major step in the development and mastering of the electronic art mediums and techniques for her and places Joellen as one of the foremost leaders in the art community with these new technical processes and electronic media.
